HOLLYWOOD -- At Tuesday's Chinese Theater preem of "Family Man," director Brett
Ratner said he was most concerned about balancing the melodrama and comedy.
"I told Nick (Cage) that this was 'Kramer vs. Kramer' with humor; it was not
'Mr. Mom,' " Rattner said. "I told him he wasn't going to be on the poster
juggling dishes."
Cage said the film, "showed a ranged of life and depth." And Tea Leoni said the
movie "doesn't choose or condone a lifestyle. It doesn't run down a life with
Amber Valletta and skiing in Aspen. But Brett also manages to sell the life
with the minivan and bowling in New Jersey."
One guest's comment was, "Only in a Hollywood movie could the hero's dilemma be
between being filthy rich and sleeping with Tea Leoni." Another noted wryly
that "for a movie about the choice between substance and content, you couldn't
have had a more appropriate audience."
Among those on hand to hear Seal sing the soundtrack's "This Could Be Heaven"
at the Palladium after-party were U's Stacey Snider, Kevin Misher and Marc
Shmuger; producers Marc Abraham, Howard Rosenman, Tony Ludwig and Alan Riche;
screenwriters David Diamond and David Weissman; plus co-stars Don Cheadle and
Jeremy Piven; guests Geoffrey Ammer, Irving Azoff, Simon Barry, Jerry
Bruckheimer, Robert Evans, Linda Lichter, Nick Reed, Marq Roswell, Joel Silver,
Russell Simmons and Lou Pitt.
